Is it worth fixing

1975 evinrude 70hp head gasket was leaking . Bought a new gasket and went to replace it and found the top piston pitted and scarred up pretty badly. The head is the same as the piston face in the top spot also. I can feel some scarring in the cylinder wall also. And the pistons have some play as in they can be moved around in the cylinder.

Motor needs to come apart for inspection.-------It is a 46 year old motor that perhaps has done a lot of work.-----Some would repair it properly for less than $1000 if you do your own work.----Others will scoff at old 2 strokes and spend $10,000 for a new 4 stroke.-----Opinions do differ.

Could be busted rings & pistons. OR, it could be catastrophic damage from ingesting water. Agreed needs to come apart to tell.

I'm new here. Thank u both. I will have to have a shop do the work I think. Bc a rebuild seems like it would take more than I know.

It will be big $$$ at a shop.-----If you can find a shop to do this work.-----Think $3000 for a proper job.-----And the lower unit needs inspection / reseal.------Be a shame to rebuild powerhead and find lower unit also needs big $$$$ repairs a month later.

I personally would not fix it and not because it is a bad motor. Just because the later models had improvements to make them run better. Anything OMC after 1980 is a good choice.
