Is it safe to run with the GRV disconnected ?

I have a 5.0 Merc and have pulled the hose off the valve on top of the engine I believe is called a GRV. The boat will not run with it hooked up. Will this do any damage running it this way?

with the motor running place a piece of tissue paper over the hose and report the findings.Check the oil for contamination.

Once had a 4.3 doing the same thing but with a miss. oil was slightly contaminated with moisture coming in from a broken exaust outer valve spring

Do you mean the PCV Valve?

What is the year or engine serial number?

Do you by chance have the TKS carburetor? Last time I had an engine running just like you described, I ended up installing a new carburetor under warranty to solve the problem rather quickly for the customer so he could get on the road to start a 3 day holiday weekend.
