Invalid Serial # on my Merc

The only SN I can find on my 4cyl, 75hp, 2 stroke Mercury outboard is in the right place, but is a sticker. The number on it is A932075 and when I search that number I come to a dead end. On the engine block there is what appears to be a freeze plug with a stamped "M" and the same number. Does this signify an engine rebuild or something? Regardless I've come to a dead end on identifying the year and model of this engine. Also, the carb number is 1379-6071. Any help would be appreciated!

You weren't going wrong, mercury is not great about serial #s from the mid 80s back. I use this website he has a pretty comprehensive list http://www.maxrules.com/

Exactly.

In 1985 Merc decided to go from all (number) serial to a "zero", "letter", then digits.

So many of the "built in late 85 to be sold as new models in 86" had a 0A9XXXX serial that doesn't show up on many of the on-line parts lists.
