Interpreting Some Operating Temps SOLVED

"This thing was bugging me so much I took today off and ran to the boat to see if my exhaust water adapter gaskets were 1 hole or 3. Frankly MAKOMARK had already given me the clues to solve this as even in the photo posted you could see the micky mouse ear tabs sticking up. Sure enough 3 hours later...ALL elbows changed with new gaskets. Since it appear that the adapter has 4 holes...ONLY 2 of them have through access and with the wrong gasket...ONE

Since the temp on that side of the block off plate was near 300 or higher....It seems as thought it would help to create more steam....Of course today is a nice day in NJ so we will see.... However, it looks and seems GREAT !

Thanks Mark !!"

Glad to help Al.

You must have a better photo than the one i looked at in your posting as I couldn't make out the tabs on the gaskets. Maybe it's just my JPEG viewer.

"Mark,

While I did need to reduce resolution to post that picture it was on line when I looked at the stainless nut on the elbow and directly in line with it were two tabs...

I also noticed , with the adapter in hand (scraping off gaskets) that while it shows 4 slots, only two are interconnected, the other two just seem to be open space to the block off plate. Do you know of a purpose for this?"

"by interconnected, I'm thinking you mean water flows thru it.

I'd say it provides them the flexibility to use the adapter on more than one product line or to rotate it if the application warrants it. Could also be some the foundry "gave them" so they could use the tooling on more than one job."

"Something to keep in mind....The casting process to make parts requires a way to get the sand core (that makes the hollow volumes) out of there. This is what the misnamed "freeze plugs" in a block are for; to get the sand cores out. On exhaust manifolds, elbows and risers, you will also see slots that have no purpose other than letting the cores out. Many--myself included-have confused these slots with water passages.

Good work, Al!

Thanks Jeff....Guided purely by makomark ! Although I have the chopped up fingers to prove I did the work. Can't wait to squeeze lemon on something for dinner..
