"I need some help with determining what part(s) I need to solve my intermittent firing of the engine. Sometimes it starts up fine, other times no power to the distributor. It is a 1978, 115hp Mercury.
A little history about the engine. It went down when my boat sunk. It was in the water for about 8 hours before we good get it raised. Once raised we, cleared the carbs, distributor and cylinders of water and the
engine fired and was running for a long time. The wiring harness, switch box, new NGK plugs have been replaced. Do you have any ideas
what would be a best guess at this point. I thought maybe the coil, mercury switch, and rectifier, basically anything electronic is suspect to cause the problem of getting fire to the distributor. I have not been able to locate "mercury switch". Is it called something else by chance? I don't know how well sealed many of these parts are when the water so long. When it runs it is very strong running engine. That is what makes it so frustrating to diagnose. I have a manual but it is not very clear about the symptoms we are having. If you have any idea what we may do next."
