Intermediate housing oil fill for 1977 omc stern drive

"was wondering if anyone knows

"was wondering if anyone knows about the oil resevoir for the intermediate housing on my 1977 omc. it has the oil fill opening at the top just behind the bumper but no intermediate housing oil drain where the manual says it should be. is it possible that this particular model does not use this resevoir? the manual says to put oil in only for 1978 and up. i tried to pump out what was in there but nothing comes out.
for the record, i am not talking about the upper or lower gearcases."

"Not all the intermediate housing has a drain, only a fill. To drain the shaft has to be pulled out."

is it imperative that i change the oil for the winter? or can i leave as is until spring?
 
"yes, cover 85 goes to the oil

"yes, cover 85 goes to the oil compartment. You can leave it till spring no problem."

seems like cover 85 will be rather hard to get to! how often does/should this compartment have its oil changed?

"I'd change it....cover isn't hard to get to on mine, but have a look and see....if it's super hard to access just leave it...there's just 2 tapered roller brgs in there....just sort of like wheel bearings on a trailer...nice to be sure if you can just suck as much out as you can and refill it's peace of mind"

fill from top. inside. same place. the large screw on the outside is a level plug. fill till it runs out there.
