Posted a little while back about the same motor. re-ringed the cylinders a few weeks back and motor will fire up 2nd pull cold and first pull warm every time. Accelerates fine, but seems to have an intermediate shutdown on one cylinder now and then. The motor will run great for hours on end, putt around at super low r.p.m.s then other times will want to drop a cylinder at mid to low speeds. Frustrating as to what is causing this. I am thinking points and condensers need to be replaced, points are gapped correctly but on one set, there is a small black circle on the contact area. Fuel system has already been replaced, lines, pump, prime ball, filters, carburetor has been rebuilt and is working correctly, plugs are burning evenly, compression is even at both cylinders. Any advice?

Rebuilding the engine, replacing points and condensers are normally replaced also. Set them as follows. I suggest that you use Champion J6C plugs in that engine gapped at .030 .

(Point Setting Of Magneto Models)
(J. Reeves)

Set the points as follows. Have the flywheel key aligned with the fiber rubbing portion of the ignition points. Adjust the gap so that a .020 gauge will pass thru but a .022 will not. Should there be any question of the points being dirty (touching the contact with your finger would cause them to be dirty), clean them with a small brush and acetone or lacquer thinner.

NOTE: Should the operating cam have a small portion on it with the word "SET" imprinted, align this portion with the fiber rubbing portion instead of the flywheel key.

Thousands of parts in my remaining stock. Not able to list them all. Let me know what you need and I'll look it up for you. Visit my eBay auction at:

Re: Intermediate Cyl. loss ' 75 6hp. Johnson

I ordered an ignition tune-up kit last night and will replace the points and condensers as soon as I get them. As for the spark plugs, yes they are J6C's and gapped at .030 Hopefully this does the trick. I will follow your advice on setting the points too. Thanks.
