"Where do I look to see what engines and lower units are compatible. I don't mind doing some investigating, matching serial #'s and such. I just need to know where or how I should go about searching."

If you are interested in compatability of parts for that 70 1150, a good rule of thumb is that distributor ignition was in 4 and 6 clyinder motors until '75 or so, then only inline sixes had it until 1978. lower units from 4 and 6 cylinder motors interchange, except the gear ratio used on the 850 was not 2::1, like the rest. Fuel pumps are of two types, and carbs are mostly the same or similar on inline sixes. Parts like cowling, midsection, suspension and transom clamps were mostly interchangable in the 4 and 6 cyl inlines."
