Interchanging motors

"i have a 1978 55 hp evinrude on my boat i just boughta 1974 70 evinrude and i was wondering before i go yanking if i can just unhook the 55 and set the 70 down and the wire and cable controls will work , thanks for all help"

i think that your harnesses bo

i think that your harnesses both have the red connector right? the wires are color coded by the plug red to red- black to black. (reffering to the main plug)

the cables changed in 79 so they should work as well.
