Intalling a telltale on a '74 9.9hp

God bless that Leroy and his ramblings (https://www.leeroysramblings.com/OMC_info/OMCinfo.htm).
Love that site. If anyone know's Leroy please pass on my thanks.

So now I'm keen on getting a telltale put on my old 9.9. I really like the idea of installing near the top of the waterjacket as per his instructions. I've got electric start so that's a bit problematic. I'm seriously considering doing as he said (and warned about) which was to rotate the regulator block about 20deg clockwise and having it hold on one screw only so that telltale hole can be installed at very top. However there does seem to be a bit of space above regulator and below wiring block...has anyone tried intalling there?

I did my tell tale like the picture on the right on leroys page. Built up a spot with weld then drilled and pipe tapped. Never did it to my 83 9.9 with electric as was there already...

thanks for the response. that's a good idea (building it up). I'm a bit concerned about relying on 1/8" thick metal to do the job but I'll likely take the risk and see how it pans out. Worst case I guess I'll replace the cover.

I think you would be fine with the 1/8 thick. Watch when you drill and tap you don't go too big on the pipe tap because of taper & you might only get like 2 or 3 treads on it. The tell tale 90deg elbow that came with my kit was plastic so it should be fine. Might tap a bit, check with fitting, tap a bit, and so on till you get the fit you want.

Thanks I’m going to give it a go and report back. I took a close look at the cover and I think I have room for a spigot just below the connection bar.
