Installing the Lower shift cable wire core

Installing the wire core into the Lower shift cable housing - the housing has been installed

The sterndrive is pre-alpha - I cannot push the wire core through. - the housing goes through the transom then 90 degrees up to as far as it will go. - this was done with a helper to screw in the brass fitting
It jams at the 90 degree bend. (have used grease)
This wire core is the latest revision - the original wire core is bare metal and there is no problem installing this core. this core is heavier than the new one - Mercury Marine/Mercruiser no longer make the old wire core.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Clarify please, is this a all new lower shift cable?

Is the casing loose from the shift plate? If not remove from shift plate and straighten it out as mush as possible

If it has a 90 degree bend, it won't work as a shift cable- it didn't have a bend before, it shouldn't have one now.

Thank you for your replies

The shift cable was only at the 90 degree bend in order the install the cable brass fitting to the bell housing - I was turning CW at the bell housing and my helper was up in the engine bay turning CCW.
(leaving 2 threads exposed at the bell housing)

The thought came to me last night to run the cable housing in its original path to the shift plate.
This meant that the bend was about 45 degrees and the inner core did slide through. - yea

Question - is the way I install the cable housing (up 90 degrees) to the engine bay the correct way to install the cable housing brass fitting or is there a better method.

Again thank you for your replies.

The more I think about this it was kind of dumb to try and run the inner core through a 90 degree bend - I was actually just testing to see if the cable would run through. i got confused because the original all metal inner core , ran through no problem. I now know how to install the Shift Cable assembly.

dont understand the 90 deg part when the shift cable is simply inserted thru the shift bellow in a straight line then you tighten it in place.this is the reason for a solid control cable to act ans the guide to routing it correctly.

Once thru the transom the cable housing bangs into the engine (Mercruiser 228 V8 305)- the correct path is route the housing to the stdb side up to the shift plate - once the cable is up to the top of the engine (rear) it has to make a 180 degree turn in order to line up with the shift plate - As you say it is a solid control cable - in my opinion it is impossible to tighten the brass fitting in the bell housing with the cable housing in this position. - just my opinion - l am a rookie

What I did was, once the cable housing was thru the transom I brought it straight up (90 degrees) - I was then turning the brass fitting CW and the helper was up in the engine bay turning the cable end CCW
What I did wrong was to try and push the inner core wire through the 90 degree bend - totally dumb move.
What I did next, once the brass fitting was tighten was to carefully route the cable housing up to the shift plate - (about a 45 degree turn from the transom) - l was then able to install the inner core wire.
The next problem I had was, I got the part number for the major shift cable kit from Mercury Marine. The cable housing was not the same as the original - the end was about 1 1/2 longer - I was not able to route this housing to the original path - long story short l saw that the minor shift cable kit had the right housing with the right end. Trouble was that the inner wire core was not the same - The inner wire core had a much smaller diameter - impossible to installed- I took the wire from the major kit and install it into the housing from the minor. I have it connected to the shift plate and the cable shifts smoothly - Sterndrive goes on tomorrow - I am a rookie at installing new shift cable.
