"For alignment use a string across the pulley faces. Seriously. Good millwrights do it that way all the time. As for tightening the belt, the photo below shows how I do it. That little jewel was sold by J C Whitney at one time and are now hard to find. Still...

i use a long, round

i use a long, round shank screwdriver, inserted thru the inboard adjusting slot, to get the tension and then tighten the outer pump bolt. then use the string, like Jeff suggests, to get the alignment correct, then tighten the inner bolt.

I've found the pump works fine with modest tension (1/2" deflection in the belt). the alignment is much more critical for belt life.

Also, check your pulleys real close for any corrosion. It will eat up a belt real fast and should be removed if found and the pulley refinished."
