"when i was trying to install

"when i was trying to install the lower gear case i ran into a problem. i assume the issue i was having was that the shift shaft was not lining up. i was coming with about 1/2" of everything coming together. after a couple of tries i removed the lower gear case and noticed that my o ring was now missing. by this time it was getting dark. i reached my finger up in there and thought i found it but it was part of a seal.
my question, what it the o ring for if there is a seal and are there any tricks to lining everything so the gear case easily goes into place. everytime i have had this off it has been a fight.

thank you"

my manual does not talk about

my manual does not talk about the seal eventhough it shows it in the illustration but it does talk about the o ring.

"You must have the shift contr

"You must have the shift control in forward!!!!
When reinstalling the lower to the upper you must turn the SHIFT SHAFT (male splines) fully clockwise and spin the prop counterclockwise until it locks!!!!!!!

Hold the prop secure, make sure the shift shaft does not move, get the water tube aligned that is or should be sticking out of the water pump assembly, as you push the lower up there is a BRONZE shift arm (with female splines) in the upper that MUST align with the shift shaft male splines. The bronze arm MUST BE POINTING AT 12:00 OCLOCK/STRAIGHT FORWARD.

If you have a preload pin then it will NOT go all the way up.

Once you are sure you have the drive shaft splines engaged in the upper gear case use the front and two side nuts to tighten it all the way.

The preload pin will keep the two from closing tight when just assembling them without useing the nuts."

"cool, thank you.
do you know

"cool, thank you.
do you know about the seal / o ring?
i dont see a need for the seal if i have an o ring."

"where is the preload pin? is

"where is the preload pin? is that the little dowl / locatorpin in the lower case?

also what do you mean by "The bronze arm MUST BE POINTING AT 12:00 OCLOCK/STRAIGHT FORWARD."
my shift shaft is splined and straight, it is not a lever.
i think it is the coupler between the two shift shafts that are giving me trouble because it is so loose. if it would stay engaged to the upper shaft it would make it easier. grease would not hold it in place."
