"I just recently bought my lil bayliner capri cuddy cabin with a Force 85 that was very well taken care off and runs great too. I have had 3 much larger fishing boats in the past and all had IO's, I have zero experience with outboards and want to keep this Force motor running good as long as possible. Aside from changing the impeller, plugs and gear oil, is there a way I can monitor the engine temp with a gage? it has a factory installed buzzer that is ment to go off in an overtemp condition. Can I add a gage to the temp switch same as you would an IO?"

Use a water pressure gauge...it will let you know when the cooling becomes restricted and so long as you look at the gauge will do so before the overheat alarm goes off. They are about 60 to 75 bucks. Faria makes one.

"Hi, thank you for your input. Will the water temp gage need to be installed in place of the excisting temp switch? and are there any other mods that are required for this to work properly on my outboard?
Thanks again."

"This is a simple water pressure guage which runs off the water pressure in the engine. If the pump becomes obstructed the guage will show you right away and long before the alarm goes off. You leave the factory alarm as is. There may be a threaded plug already on you engine, as there was on my Yami. Removed the plug, took it to a fitting supply company and matched it to a fitting that excepts the tube supplied in the guage kits. Just have to install the guage on the dash where you can see it easily, then run the hose from the engine up to it."
