Installing a starter motor Honda BF15

Hi,

I just bought my first boat with a Honda BF15A motor. It’s an old one (-95 or -96 I think) but it runs ok and I got it at a reasonable price.

I don’t have any problems starting it generally but my wife seem to have some trouble using the recoil starter. I guess she isn’t strong enough or have the right technique...

So my question is: how difficult is it to install an electrical starter motor? Is it even possible? Is it very difficult and costly?

I’m not a mechanic but I’ve have owned quite a few mopeds and snow mobiles (at least that’s what I think they are called in English) that I have taken apart and put together a few times so these type of small engines are not completely new to me.

And do you have any clue to what a starter motor (new or used) might cost in the US and if they are easy to get your hands on?

Love this forum by the way. Helped me a lot when I first got my BF15 and it wouldn’t run properly :) Thank you all for sharing our knowledge!

Unfortunately, it will probably cost you more than you paid for your motor.

The basic things you will need.

Starter with starter solinoid $400 US http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Honda/Outboard%20Engine/0/BF15AK%20SAS%20OUTBOARD%20ENGINE%2C%20JPN%2C%20VIN%23%20BAAS-1100001/STARTER%20MOTOR/parts.html

A new flywheel (yours probably does not have any teeth for the starter to engage) $200 US http://www.boats.net/parts/search/H...E, JPN, VIN# BAAS-1100001/FLYWHEEL/parts.html

Battery cable and fusing. $115 US http://www.boats.net/parts/search/H..., JPN, VIN# BAAS-1100001/REGULATOR/parts.html

Starter button. $30 US http://www.boats.net/parts/search/H...PN, VIN# BAAS-1100001/ENGINE COVER/parts.html

You still may have to do some creative wiring, since the electric start version has a different voltage regulator, which I think has some additional wiring to it. You can probably wire around it.
