Hello everyone, I was wondering what I would need to install a generator on my 1960 40hp johnson . I no that this motor had the option to have one so you could charge your battery . Could I just purchase the generator and mount it then attach it straight to the battery or do I have to purchase some more parts like relay and so on. what parts are involved ?

There is also a bracket, a toothed belt and flywheel to match and then a regulator and wiring...In my opinion, more trouble than it is worth...also a weight gain of about 50 pounds....if you do decide to do it, a parts motor would be the way to go. If you are only running a starter and lights, it is easier to just charge the battery every 3 or 4 weeks...you do have a rope starter and a magneto so you you can still start it even with a dead battery.

Hello Bobbyc , I found a generator for sale that was cheap and seeing how mine did not have one and I know it had the option for one. I just wanted to see if it was worth putting on. I already have the mounting bracket on the motor and I believe the correct flywheel the only thing I was not sure of was how to wire it and if I needed some sort of relay. I think I will just keep it the way it is and charge the battery every couple of weeks like I am doing now. Thanks for the reply
