"I have a 1994 30 HP evinrude that I installed a new water pump in. Now after putting the lower unit back on, the motor will not shift out of drive into neutral or reverse. When I take the double nut shift connection at the water pump intake off, the upper rod moves fine. The lower rod moves about 1/4 to 1/2 inch but does not shift anything. I did remove the shift lever pin next to the drain hole, while trying to get the lower unit off, but after some manuevering of the engine was able to get it reinstalled (correctly?). Any ides on what me be causing the problem? It shifted fine prior to putting the new water pump in, which by the way seems to be working fine."
