I have a 1973 Omc Sterndrive 1

I have a 1973 Omc Sterndrive 165hp with a Chevy straight six 250ci I think. I need to replace the transom seal. I have read a few articles that say to take out the screws in transom. Then undo the hose clamp holding the other end. I understand all of that but do I need to remove the lower unit to change the seal. Will the seal stretch over the lower unit? If I need to remove the lower unit any advice or good articles on it? Is it a pretty straight forward process? No special tools or allignment? Thank you for all of the help ahead of time.

"No special tools. You can get the old boot off and new one on without removing the drive. It will stretch over the drive, just take your time and use some dishwash fluid or something slick to slide it off the drive."

"I did mine successfully witho

"I did mine successfully without dish soap. I also did not use any sealant but carefully cleaned the seal points (0 leaking). Some will argue you should use a sealant of some sort. But adding the soap to get over the outdrive can be difficult to get off and prohibit a sealant from adhearing (if you choose to use one.)

Slow and steady. get an extra set of hands if you can. Dont strip your screw holes and take a good look at your transom while you are in there.

If you find rot and are still up to the challenge of a repair check out www.seacast.com. It worked great on my boat (see their forum and look under 1985 Wellcraft).

Good luck."

1973 is electric shift so you might as well remove the drive... a dozen bolts and 1 electrical connection and it's out of the way
