1) Carefully inspect the o-ring ( even if they really aren't) seals on the drive fill and drain plugs. I was just about to pour fresh oil into the drive when I discovered some impacted crud sitting on the half moon "notch" in the shifter cover plate. Some of it had dislodged and was all set to take a dive into the innards of the drive... A twisted piece of paper towel plugged the fill hole while I cleaned out the surrounding area of crap.
I discovered a large divot in the drain seal right in the middle between the raised ridges. Now I have to find out what made that divot before I replace the drain screw.
2) Several years ago, I found a great exploded view and parts cross reference on a website (stemtostern.com). I bookmarked it and printed out one or two pages. Today, I went looking for that website so I could find the part numbers for the seals for the fill and drain screws on my drive. What I found is that the web page that was the home page for that GREAT parts breakdown no longer exists and to add insult to injury, it now directs you to a web company that sell marine stern drive parts for everyone EXCEPT volvo.
I spent the last hour+ trying to find an online LEGIBLE parts list that included 280/290 drives to no avail. Volvo's "official" site does not have them. The closest I came (including the sponsor of this website) is someone who sells parts offering to sell me the parts book for $25. I've got the original Chris Craft/Volvo part manual that came with my boat (in 1969) however... its for the original 250 drive.
Lesson learned... if you find something interesting and useful on the internet, save it to your hard drive and burn it to a CD. Don't rely on bookmarks ... URLs change and website owners go out of business.
