" I am about to tackle replacing my impellor on my 1991 Mariner 115 and while I am normally pretty mechanically inclined I am not stupid enough to plow blindly into something new so..... Are there any tricks or "be careful abouts" that I should know? seems like a straight forward repair, but they are JUST the ones that can get you into trouble sometimes, right?

" The easy part is removing the gearcase. Then the pump is right there. Inspect the cup and plate for wear, replace if necessary, along with the gaskets. Put a little grease on the new impeller for lubrication on reassembly. On reinstalling the geacase you might have to turn the flywheel a little to align the splines of the driveshaft with the crankshaft. Make sure the water tube goes into the pump guide and the upper and lower shiftshafts align properly. Try shifting the control, before tightening the nuts all the way, to make sure the splines are aligned. And just don't force anything. Good luck "

" I have the lower unit off a 1975 850 Mercury. The shift shaft, no matter which way you turn it will not place the gears in neutral. It is always in forward no matter what I do. When turning the prop it will turn freely and click in one direction. What can be wrong? "

" Clay,

Next time, add a new thread...

I had the same problem on a 1973 1500 Mercury lower unit. The shift cam is out of alignment. While turning the driveshaft, keep turning the shift shaft counter clockwise and you will find the neutral position.

Of course, I'm assuming that it worked ok until you took it off.

Never shift the lower unit without turning the prop shaft or the driveshaft. You can damage the shifting mechanism.
