Impeller

I have a 1970 4 HP Evinrude. I pulled the 4 bolts out of the bottom and it will not come apart to get to the impeller. I suspect who ever had this motor last didn't flush the salt out of it and it may be bound up. Everything appears free. I can turn the prop. How do I get it apart so I can look at the impeller and replace it?

Try shifting it into reverse and see if that pops the lower loose, then you can access the shift rod connector.

Which lower unit is on your motor. If you have the weedless one no shifter the lower should just drop out.

My motor doesn't have a reverse on it. I have tried to take it apart with no luck. I think corrosion might be preventing it from coming apart. There are a lot of pot aluminum pieces and suspect if I go to far, I will break a case.

If the gearbox wiggles it is possible the driveshaft is rusted into the crank. Lay it on its side and drip power steering fluid on the crack between cases and then hang a cinder block fronm the gearbox and let gravity do its job. If the driveshaft is frozen into the crank you may break the water pump housing then hold it upside down and drip powersteering fluid down the driveshaft and let it soak in for a few days and hang a weight from the shaft and let gravity and chemicals do their job. Be patient!

I drill a hole in the right spot and spray P. Blaster in there. Let it stand upside down a couple days, respraying once or twice more. After that I have some plastic and hardwood wedges to tap in. If it doesnt go right away, then leave the wedge pressure on, turn it right side up, while on the motor stand, put something below to catch the lower unit.....because it will drop when I whack the flywheel nut.......just right.......with a nice piece of white oak. I cut some threads in the 5/16" hole I had drilled, then put in a set screw or short 3/8 bolt......stainless. Assemble cleaned up shaft/crank with anti seize and a new o-ring if applicable. Anti seize will way out perform any grease the factory used. Remember who told you about drilling the hole.......why do I give out my secrets? I'm getting old, got lotta tricks. Somebody gotta help Mr.Reeves.....he's getting older than me.
