I have a 1989 mercruiser 5 liter engine.
I'm trying to locate the impeller. I don't know the last time it was replaced or checked.
Is it in the water pump itself?

"Re: "I'm trying to locate the impeller". Rob, the impeller is located in the top of the "foot", which is the bottom part of the outdrive. You have to drop the foot to access the impeller. If you're handy with tools and have a dog to kick and a six pack it isn't too hard a job. These guys can walk you thru it. Mine is a 1979 and may be different. }}Good luck. JW in Dixie"

"It should take you about a half hour if you know what you are doing, and maybe 45 minutes if you don't get the drive in forward when you put it back on.

Leave the prop on. I've found it's easier to keep it in gear that way.

1. Raise the drive all the way up. Drive MUST BE IN FORWARD! Drain the oil.
2. Remove the trim cylinders.
3. Remove the sacrificial anode fin from the rear of the drive. (3/8" Allan head)
4. Remove the nut on the front of the drive by the shift cable. Remove the 2 nuts from the underside of the anti-cavitation plate. Remove the bolt where the sacrificial anode was (5/16" Allan heaad).
5. Loosen the two nuts accessible from the side until they hit the drive. Give the bottom a pull and it should move a little. Pry it down until the 2 nuts hit the bottom of the enclosure and then remove them. Be careful, don't drop the drive.
6. Replace the impeller and housing, don't forget the o-ring.
7. Installation is the reverse of removal. Make sure the drive is in forward when you put it back on, and remember to put those 2 enclosed nuts on first before shoving the drive all the up in to the upper housing. (you may need to turn the prop shaft to align it properly. Do not spin it out of gear.)
8. Fill with oil and pressure test.

Good luck!

Mike"
