Impeller Replacement-

Hello all,

I am trying to replace the impeller on my mid 1990's 5HP Mercury Mariner Two-Stroke outboard. When I pulled the lower unit off, the driveshaft stayed in the upper housing. I don't think it should have done that... I have replaced the impeller, but now I don't knoiw how to get the impeller key in the keyway. Furthermore, I can't seem to get the driveshaft to go back into the lower unit. Any input or tips would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks!

sounds odd, are you sure that your motor doesn't have a Bay Manufacturing shaft extender kit? That would convert your motor from short shaft to long and would have provided a short driveshaft extender piece that would have stayed up in the motor.

thanks hotrod - it is not a long shaft. The driveshaft has stayed with the powerhead, and I believe this may be a fatal problem. I will try to loosen it and remove it so I can insert it into the lower gearcase, but others have suggested I may be cooked. thanks again, fins.
