I recently got my 1970 Johnson 9.5 horse model 9R70C. I wanted to check on the impeller, just because it's new to me. Here is how I did it.
Remove 4 bolts connecting Gear case to Mid section.
this will allow gear case to drop about an inch, Put shift lever in up position to allow LU to drop.
completely remove bottom screw from brass block to seperate the shift linkage.
Gently pull out lower unit, disconnecting shaft from powerhead.
remove prop and inspect seals for debris and leaks, I had both.
Impeller is housed on drive shaft, remove 4 straight edge screws to access impeller. shown in order bronze seal, housing, impeller, base plate not shown but make sure it's reasonably smooth.
impeller is keyed to match drive shaft.
Reassembly is the opposite, confirm function of shifter before final tightening. replace any o-rings, seals or gaskets that may need it.
Also a very oppertune time to service the gear oil.
