I was wondering is it necessary to change the impeller every two years? How can I tell when the impeller is bad? I have a 2002 rinker I bought it used and It worked great this year. I had another boat that I never had to change the impeller. It was 18 years old. Any help would be appreciated.

"Chris;
18 years is amazing for an impeller. That thing must have been getting pretty crispy.

As BD says, 2 years is a good safe schedule.
Some say every year, which I think is overkill.

My personal rule is every 5 years or 250 hours MAX; or if the drive is off or apart for any other reason (and it almost always is). That seems to work for me. I keep one or two spare impeller kits on hand at all times.

Your 2002 is due for changing I would say. You are on borrowed time, and you don't want to run the risk of it disintegrating and getting bits lodged in your cooling hoses.

The gen II impellers last a lo

The gen II impellers last a lot longer than the older r/mr/alpha impellers. These impellers will last a minimum of 5 yrs but for preventative maintainance reasons it's not a bad idea to change these impellers 5-7 yrs. I've changed impellers that are 10+ and they're perfectly fine. A new impeller sure beats a overheated engine any day especially a holiday or family outing.
