"I've got a 454 MPI and I

"I've got a 454 MPI and I just ordered a new impeller from Marine Engine...The last impeller only had two hrs on it installed from the dealer.. it went to pieces...they wouldn't cover the cost of a new one...they did put a kit on it though. My questions are: Is there any tricks I need to know in replacing the old one? I took the old one off and i made sure the hose coming from the outdrive was clean from the broken pieces..Is there anything else I need to know? The dealer said to put a non petroleum based lube in the chamber for the impeller itself, is that true. Thanks, Gustav"

"2 hours? Did he check it to make sure there was water flow? I have the same engine and just had mine replaced. When you put the pump back together, pull the hose off the thermostat housing to verify water flow. The pump can be re-position during assembly, meaning the hoses can be switched around. Also, check the pump surface for pitting. I run mine in saltwater and had to replace the whole pump."

I ran the boat and it worked fine in the lake. It sat in storage for 4 mos. The dealer says it's from being out of the water......I'd say yeah it could dry rot if it was sitting for a year but for 4 mos under cover c'mon.... that's crap .... Mercury says they dont cover wearable parts....Thanks for the hints Thomas!

"That's B.S.. When I blew

"That's B.S.. When I blew the first motor, the impeller had been replaced 10 hours before the event. It took 7 months to get her back in the water, and I ran that impeller for another 105 hours. The only 2 times I ever blew an impeller was due to sucking up a plastic bag. I've taken care of that by blocking off the water intake on the Bravo 1 and installing a thru-hull fitting with a SS sea strainer."

Hey I have one more ?.... Wher

Hey I have one more ?.... Where the hell is the alarm located on a 99 baja hammer? When I turn my key it's supposed to beep 2 x's and it doesn't....is it the mechanism or is it a fuse? Can anyone help me out? Thanks

I have a 1999 Formula 34 PC with 454 mercrusier v drives. Suggestions on how to get access to the impellers. I need to change both engines.

Ayuh,..... Simple, this thread yer hy-jacking is 24 years old, start a new thread of yer own, to get ideas on how to get to yer raw water pumps,.......

What I am looking for is how to physically get to the impellers. Due to the engines being v-drives the front of the engines are facing aft. Ideas???

Start your own thread.

However, since you asked, this is not easy to do, but it would be much easier for us to advise if you post photos showing access panels near the engine(s).

Great suggestion - I think I will need to come in from the top. What should I remove? Attached are recent pic's.

Can't see the raw water pumps, so it's impossible to say. You'll need to look at the front of the engines and follow the hoses- you'll see a pair that are mounted close together on a pump that's similar to the one in the photo- unless they included access panels or storage bins aft of the hatch, you're probably not going to enjoy this.

Hi Jimn, So how did you get back there? I have PD and the rigidity is brutal. Any tricks how to get back behind the engines? Thank you so much.

Hi Jimn, So how did you get back there? I have PD and the rigidity is brutal. Any tricks how to get back behind the engines? Thank you so much.

It depended on the boat- this is EXACTLY the reason I have posted that boat designers should be forced to service boats before they ever have a chance to make anyones' life a living hell by thinking "I can get that to fit". That's incredibly stupid and it reminds me of the grade school question "If the school will send 247 students on a field trip and their buses hold 72 students, bow many buses will they need?" Any answer that's not a whole number larger than 3 is wrong and when engineers or designers decide that the space they allow is large enough for the engine, drive, steering, etc, it's a good bet that they're wrong. Sometimes, I had to ask a smaller tech to do things because I just didn't fit and sometimes, I had to work blind, like the time I had to replace the power steering cylider in a Regal- it was impossible to see everything and there wasn't enough height to get my arms in from the top, so I had to reach around some parts.

When I did car audio, I came to the conclusion that if I could find an installer who was 2'-3' tall, had great strength & manual dexterity and didn't mind working in cramped spaces, life would be good. Well, for me, not the installer. I was surprised that I could fit into some of the small spaces I did- I'm about 6'-2" and regularly worked in the back seat area of the 3rd generation Chevy Camaro.

A small, young & flexible wife or GF with mechanical aptitude would be handy about now.

How many times do you think a wife of any size or flexibility would do this kind of work? I think it would be one and done, I'm not sure it would be finished and I believe there would be a fair amount of complaining but when asked, they would say "It's OK, I'm fine"..
