impeller exploded

I have a mercruiser 165 with sea water cooling system. I found impeller parts inside the heat exchanger. I cleaned and reinstalled but am unable to refill the system due to leak between the engine side and seawater side. What is most likely cause/place of the leak?

Are you suggesting that the ethylene glycol side is leaking into the sea water side... or visa-versa?
If so, I agree with Bondo..... so you may want to send it out and have pressure tested.
A good shop may be able to repair it.

Be sure that you retreive all of the impeller pieces.... from the pump to the H/E.
Don't over-look one single area, or it may come back to haunt you later on.

Chief, I highly doubt that any fragments could make it that far with a Closed Cooling system.

With a closed cooling system, these impeller fragments rarely make it past the first tube bundle area.
This would normally be last in the path where these could become lodged, IMO.
IOW, they would be very small if they were able to go any further.

I'd be looking at the pump body, the pump tube-to-upper unit, the hose that connects the bell to the transom unit, that particular transom fitting, and from there forward.

If equipped with P/S, I'd be looking at the P/S oil cooler "tube bundle".
In fact, I'd be surprised if any could make it past the oil cooler tube bundle.
If any pieces are lodged at this cooler, they will cause an issue.

Be that as it may, it sounds like his H/E leak is now the main concern.
