impeller change on 4hp

Hi All, As I stated before I'm new to outboards, I got my engine to start finally and now it isn,t streaming water through the water pump check hole. The engine is a 4hp (E4RDHCUD) I pulled the gear case but the drive shaft pulled through water pump and stayed in the power head. The impeller has one cracked fin so it needs replaced. My question is how do I get the drive shaft loose from the power head?

Put a vice-grips on the d/s in a none sealing area and give it a few raps. If that doesn't work, turn the mtr upside down and spray some PB Blaster down the d/s and let it sit giving the d/s some side way blows.

Thanks for the reply Boobie, I will try in the morning. I was thinking of trying that but was kind of afraid of putting blemishes on the shaft, I will keep you up-dated. Thanks again;)

put the vise grips on pretty tight, hit it with the hammer and the only thing that moved were the vise grips down the D/S. Are you sure there isn/t something holding it in? I have the motor upside down now with WD-40 sprayed down the D/S. Not sure if that will loosen it,but will take some liquid wrench over later. I'm working on some outboards for an 82 year old neighbor with health issuses,So I thank everyone for their input and help.

Hi Boobie, I put the vise grips on pretty tight,Then hit it with the hammer and the only thing that moved were the grips. Are you sure there isn't anything else holding the D/S in? I have the motor upside down now with WD-40 sprayed down the d/s. Not sure if that will free it up but will take some liquid wrench over later and spray that down the d/s. Do you live in Bonita Springs? I live in Cape Coral.

Throw that wd-40 away and get some PB-Blaster or even ATF mixed 50-50 with Acetone and try that. I don't know of any thing else that could hold it except stuck splines.

Thanks for the acetone and aft idea, will try that then get some pb-blaster if that don't work. Don't know how long this motor has been lying on its side, But when I cleaned the carb, the bowl was so full of rust the float wouldn't even move. Runs good now just didn't pee.

I had the same thing with a 40 hp Evinrude ('75), the reason the drive shaft is stuck up in the head is likely that someone didn't grease the splines at the top of the driveshaft where it enters. I've got a couple videos where I dealt with it and it did involve turning the motor upside down and over the course of a few days, i kept spraying PB blaster down the driveshaft and let it soak. Then I rigged a slide hammer of sorts, and it worked great to remove! I had initially tried the vise grip thing too and had the same trouble of it sliding even when on there very tight.

In this one, i showed how i cleaned out the gunk from where it was seized up in the power head.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the idea Leo, Funny thing is the guy I'm working on this for ,is his name is Leo also. Was I supposed to take that shift rod loose,as it came out with the gear case. Will I be able to get it back together? By the way great video, very good idea!

Shouldn't be a problem to get the shift rod back in. From the parts diagram on this site, it didn't look like it had a screw to disconnect, but you'll want to double check how it connects. The shift rod usually does come out with the lower unit, however, some are a two part with a place to disconnect them.

update, Been soaking for about 4 days, using acetone and atf mix, Made the slide hammer and still won't budge. Just went over a used pb-blaster and will try to let it soak for a few more days, after using the blaster on it every day. Does anyone think that I can pull the motor with the drive shaft attached and apply heat to the crank?

Do you have the motor sitting upside down? Yep, nothing worked for me except PB Blaster. Keep at it, it will come loose. I about gave up when it finally came flying out, it actually startled me, haha!

Update on the drive-shaft removal: Went over today, pulled hard up on the slide hammer about ten times and was about to give up, Decided to try a few real quick pulls and it popped out!!! Thanks for the great idea again. Leo, you were a life saver.
