I just bought my first boat with a 76 35hp Johnson.
I started it up last weekend. I started the motor up with the muffs on it and the top hole was just spitting water out. I shut it down after about thirty seconds because of the water flow.Is water supposed to flow when first started or does the thermostat have to open before there is a flow out the outlet?

"It needs to flow all of the time, you will notice as the motor heats up the water will get hotter"

"Are you talking about the ope

"Are you talking about the opening in the back of the engine, just below the powerhead? If so, that is an exhaust relief port. On muffs, there isn't all that much water that normally flows from there."

Yes I am talking about the two

Yes I am talking about the two holes under the power head where the exhaust comes out. The holes just above the intake on the lower end have plenty of water coming out even when the motor is not running. Is there another location that I am missing?

You have through hub exhaust o

You have through hub exhaust on your engine. With the engine running on a hose there is no back pressue and most of the water will come out around the prop. With the engine in the water you will notice more water out of the relief ports.

"Yeah Mike, these engines don't have the tell-tales that the newer ones have. We used to gauge waterpump life on these by just changing them regularly (I used to stretch it to two years) Others can tell you how to add a tell-tale, or pressure gauge, I have never done it on an older engine."

Thanks for the help. I guess since it is new to me the best thing would be to just change it before I use it.
