"replacing impellar on a 4 HP yamaha built Mariner 1990 model 4A
when removed water pump housing impellar was totally nubbed down to no teeth at all , Idid find them thought! lol , all stuck in the intake vent holes below the pump .The thing is now I got a replacement and have no idea which direction the rubber teeth should be twisted to. I am guessing counter the direction of the rotation of the engine as no matter in forward or reverse the impellar does not change directions as the motor does not .

Would I be correct in my guesstimation ? Any help gladly appreciated, don't wanna trash a 15 dollar peice of rubber.

thanks"

"so the impellar teeth get lube on them? The rest I'm with you on. Turning shaft clock wise makes the rubber teeth curve left or counter clock wise right.

as for the lubricant ,it just has to be a water resistant gear lube or will like grease gun lube work? Would using a petroleum based lubricant cause the impellar to wear down?

thanks for the reply"

"anything will work just to get the housing down over the new impellar without tearing it. That lube won't be there long with the friction and grit in the water. Vasoline, wd-40, or the grease gun will due."

"alright, I finally got the new pump housing in the mail and comensed to reassembling everything and I have one very small part left that I cannot tell where it goes or what it is. It is a small (not quite as long as a dime) aluminum cylinder that is about 10 mm or so in diameter. looks like a spacer or something to me . One end has a smaller opening . kinda looks like a peg of some sorts. I don't wanna finish the assembly and reinstall the lower unit till I find were this goes. I have a picture which is a very good closeup. What can it be? Image is attached

"Thanks for the reply. I have ruled out the water tube parts , as the water tube was never removed. I remember it falling out after I removed the plate(large thick one) under the pump housing to pour out and drain the gear oil so I wouldn't spill any. I was thinking that it went under neath one of the bolts but my memory fails me there. It fits perfectly on top of the reverse rod which is not pictured in the diagram that you linked me to. Also that diagram is different from the one I have, mine is a Yamaha built Mariner which has quite a different pump housing all together. I got a diagram for it check this out:
