"i have a 1970 60 hp johnson i took it up camping for 4 days the day before i left i took a couple people tubing it was a little hard to start but once it did it ran good all day, then i drove it up to the adirondacks put it in the water and it started great and ran good for the whole day, the next morning it was hard starting ...by that i mean i can get it to start buti cant put it in gear or it dies this laasts for about 10 minutes... but once it did it ran pretty good for the day it idleed well and ran high speed well on the third day it once again was hard starting and ran good for half of the day then i went to take off and it gave me about 1/4 to 1/2 speed and i could hear like a cylender or something keep kicking in and when it did the bout would take of and it just kept going back and forth, so i replaced the spark plugs they were very black and then it ran great for another day and a half but it still wasnt idling good the ony way i could get it to idle was if i flicked the electric choke switch quick then i could hear the engine pick up and it would be fine till it startred bogging down again i use the choke alot even when im trying to get to high speed i need to use it or the engine boggs and dies out... someone told me it might be reed valves ???"

Reed valves not likely.Pull th

Reed valves not likely.Pull the flywheel and set the points to 0.010". Clean the distributor cap and rotor.Check / replace the anti - reversing spring. Replace the wee boots on the wires at the cap. Open up the low speed needles 1/8th turn and try again

You could have some bad gas th

You could have some bad gas that could be fouling plugs. Did you mix the fuel too rich? You may have picked up something that caused a partial block in the fuel system. Make sure all of the connections are tight on the fuel lines

"check to see if your primer bulb is going soft when these problems show up. I had a small leak in the pickup tube inside of my fuel tank, a bad fuel pump, and a bad primer bulb that was causing my engine to do the same. I replaced everything fuel system wise and rebuilt my fuelpump......it's all good now!!"

They are the little black rubb

They are the little black rubber things that go over the wires where they enter the cap.It should have them.
