Ignition switch problem?

I have lost essentially all power on my 90 hp outboard 1982. Brought it to my local marina to have them check it out and they are telling me cylinders 1,3 and 5 are getting no power and that the top ignition switch is dead. Sounds like it is about a $200 part. Is this something I can tackle myself? Any concern this is just step 1 of many leading to a lot more than my $1,200 investment in the whole boat?

It is quite possible to have one of the 2 " switch boxes " to be bad.----Easy to replace yourself , as the wires can be taken off one by one and installed on the replacement.----------------Many folks will tell you to replace both of them !-------Wellcome to the world of electronic ignitions, they do cost money every now and then but usually work year after year with no maintenance required.

Thanks for the feedback! Is it a bad idea to troubleshoot by just replacing one at this time? I am not totally convinced this is the only problem, but want to limit the amount I spend on this "classic" boat. I see the current parts in there are mercuiser while I see CDI offers the replacement parts online. Ok to mix and match?

You can do this trouble shooting by switching the 2 boxes and see what happens to spark.--------------As for choosing replacement part I can not recommend anything.
