I have a 440 c.I. chysler 1973. I can not get it above 2500rpm, it starts up great, idles ok. When its not under load rpm will run up ok, but under a load it will not go above 2500 rpm. it also does not miss on the way up to 2500 rpm. it has newer Eldebrock carbs. A few years ago I installed a Mallory dist. I checked out module ( according to Mallory instructions it checked out 1 .3 volts. Also timing is spot on. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks

Will it free rev to 4500?
Recheck the firing order. Trace each plug wire to each cylinder. I've seen 5 & 7 swapped, free rev easy, but dog under load.

When you say that you checked the ignition timing, did you check base/initial advance only?

You will not only want to check base/initial advance, you will want to also take a look at the progressive and total advance.
Most any engine will rev to its maximum with no load placed on it, regardless of the progressive or total advance.

However, once a load is placed on it, the ignition system must maintain the correct progressive advance curve including the total advance at the specified RPM!

Dave69 is probably correct. Wires are easy to cross. My wires were on incorrectly causing a large loss of power. Also may check your chokes to make sure they are working correctly. Did you ever solve the issue? Been 4 months. Please let us know what you find.

Ayuh,..... Yer blamin' the Ignition, yet yer symptoms say it ain't gettin' good Gas Flow, at higher Rpms,.....

The OP Dons has not posted to his thread since last October2014.
I would assume that he's found the problem, or that he has lost interest in his thread!

Either that or he's waiting for spring, like the rest of us!

PS: Las time I was at my boat--the monthly check--it was barely above freezing--and it was the warmest day of the week!
