Ignition fuse - Mercruiser 228

Engine would not turn-over completely dead and panel dials fuel quantity etc. not working. Found inline fuse had melted its plastic casing. This is located in a red wire running from rev-counter and into a wiring loom. I could not open the fuse carrier so I removed one end from the R/C and cut the other end. I cut the carrier open and the fuse was in mush inside. I chanced connecting the R/C terminal to the end of the wire running into the loom. Switched on and the dials worked and the engine turned over. My query is (1) Any opinions why fuse melted as engine had been running perfectly prior to this. (2) What amp fuse should fitted. I immediatlely switched off the the engine when it turned over. Very grateful for any help.

Ayuh,..... Corrosion,..... It creates Resistance, which in turn creates Heat,....

A dead short would blow the fuse,...

Corroded connections just drive ya Crazy,...

Thank you all for your advice - No, BtDoctur nothing added. Just have to try and find why fuse blew now. Thanks again.
