"I have a 96 5.7L (w/ stock 4bbl carb) in a 96 Maxum 2100c that will start w/ assistance of full choke, but won't idle without aid of the choke. The engine will re-start w/ the choke, but won't idle without the choke.

Checked and cleaned the carb, couldn't find anything out of the ordinary. Drained the fuel tank and pumped new gas into the tank. Am located in remote part of Alaska, and don't have direct access to either a dealer and or marina.

Anyone have any ideas as to where to begin to track the problem(s)?"

What you are saying sounds to me like it has a manual choke. Item #8 is the "choke pulldown" and should open the choke, #14, upon starting. The diaphragm inside is known to fail and won't pull off the choke so it can idle.

"For whatever reason I've not been able to open the webpage to review the diagram & associated part numbers, per your attached address.

I did go to "mercruiserparts.com" website, selected the appropriate webpage for the engine type, but am having problems identifying which section to look for the diagram of the choke.

Can you advise which section I should select to review?"

"Friends & I found that the base gasket of the carburetor had a crack in it, and was leaking air (we tested it by spraying it w/ engine starter). After replacing the gasket, the engine now idles as its normally done so.

Thanks for your assistance."
