"88 evinrude xp 150, when i set idle timing at the right degree the engine idles smooth but too fast (throttle plates are closed) and it wont shut off, (diesleing), if i retard timing enough to get it to shut down, it idles too rough (coffs and spits) and sometimes stalls out, any suggestions?"

"idle pick up timing,..is the area,at which the throttle cam ,picks up roller...once u get that set correctly,reduce idle speed...rem,this is there area it picks UP the roller,...it does not stay at that area.factory service manual has the exact procedure for this.,and unless someone has screwed it all up,..is very rarely the problem..your dieseling,..sounds to me that u have a carb w/butterflies slightly open,and ur idling way too fast...do a complete link and sync,then set idle pick up,timing,....then,....set idle SPEED...."

"have u checked the timing pointer,marked the flywheel,(i use white out)..if u dont have the piston stop tool,or another method,..u r spinnning your wheels.This is all part,of a professional tune up..alot more than screwing in 6 plugs.I highly suggest a thorough de-carb also..."
