"Hi to all,just wonderind whats the best way to check R.P.M AT IDLE.I have a digital tachometer and normally check R.P.Ms with the ear muffs on.Would putting motor in a tub of water and then checking RPM'S give you a different reading.....CHEERS"

"yes , with the lower unit in the water it will read a bit lower,remember muffs are only good for flushing.the engine must be in its element,
thats what it is designed for ,not running in the back yard on a hose."

It'll be interesting to hear if you find a measurable difference between running on muffs and running in a tub or even on the back of the boat.

"On a flushette, setting the idle at 1000 for a 20" shaft engine and 1200 for a 25" shaft engine has always worked out fine for me. In the water, the rpm, due to back pressure, would drop to a normal idle rpm.

"Thanks heaps for all your responses,after doing a check again at idle with the muffs on,it registered at 1000rpms,when i took boat out to the lake,it dropped down to 930 or 940 rpms,so at that point i increased rpms to 1100, and now she purrrs like a kitten.Once again thanks heaps for all your feed back........CHEERS
