Idle Question...

At the beginning of a trip I can fire the motor and will idle fine, well as good as this motor idles anyway. After I make a run and fish for awhile the motor will not idle unless the throttle is open quite a bit, which is really loud. It has done this the whole time I have owned the boat. Any thoughts?

no mechanic but the idle speed ( RPM's) were set to low at 450 and it would start but shook alot, there is a idle speed and max rpm's sticker by the tilt and trimmoter, rose rpms to 650 and now good as new. there is also the electric choke that can stick.

Did you increase the rpm's at he idle screw? t idles at about 700, I believe...

I have not messed with the carbs at all, yet. I did recently (with in 5 hrs) replace the spark plugs.

By running it like what? I'm not really following you here. Is there anything I can check at home as far as the butterflies you're refernecing, ETC? Sorry, I'm learning all this as I go. When you say 1 1/2 turns, how is that measured? What tools am I looking for?

The engine runs good, the idle is part is a PITA.

Thanks

Start the trouble shooting with a compression test.---------Most of these Mercury motors automatically reduce oil injection pump output at idle via a link to the throttle.----So adjust it for smoothest idle and no stumble on acceleration.

There is a sticker that says idle screw adjustment, this was a new 08 boat , engine and trailer that sat in the show room, I bought it in 10, I think the cable stretched from being new? there is a sticker that says idle screw adjustment, watched the tack with engine running on muffs, helped it start and eliminate most of the shaking on idle, supposedly this engine idles a little rough compared to the 4 strokes but put it in gear and give it a little gas it runs pretty well. 3 blade 19 pitch I think 13 diameter 15 spline merc prop ( alum.) 5500 rpm 55 mph with 2 people. also just me but I add 1 oz marine stabil for every 10 gals. of gas all season long, might be a waste of money but seems to work.
