I have a 1984 Johnson 50HP an

I have a 1984 Johnson 50HP and it idles and then stops running. Once I get it going it is sluggish to gain speed but it does and runs OK. My proglem is when I come into the dock in slow speed it quits and I have to start it to reverse the engine so I don't hit the dock.

"James.... Check the compression, should be 100+ psi and even on all cyls. With the s/plugs removed, check the spark, should jump a 7/16" gap on all cyls with a strong blue flame. If these area are okay, I'd suspect you have fouled carbs. The cure being to remove, clean, and rebuilt them.
