identifying v8 johnson

i recently boat a johnson outboard trying to identify it. its a v8 and it says gt350 on the cover of the engine
guy i bought it from did not know much about it said its 1996 300hp if anyone has more info with this please help thanks

Look on the transom bracket on the port side of the engine. You should see a plate or sticker with a model number something like this: J300PLEOR and another line with a serial number. If it's from the 90's this will be a sticker with printed info. If it's older it will be an aluminum plate with stamped numbers and letters.

1995 is the last year the V8 300HP was made, so it can't be a '96.
