I recently acquired a boat and an Johnson motor. I don't know if it is a 15hp or a 25hp and I don't know the year. I can't find any numbers on the motor any suggestions on how I can find out what I have?

"James, if the motor isn't

"James, if the motor isn't more than about 30 years old the model should be stamped on a welsh plug (small silver disk about the size of a quarter) back on the waterjacket near the spark plugs.

The pic is of a little Evinrude, but will give you an idea of what you are looking for and where to look...

Looks like an early 70's 2

Looks like an early 70's 25hp...I think the welsh plug is visible to the right of the lower ignition coil

"Yes Bob, I think you have it

"Yes Bob, I think you have it - I would peg that at an early to mid-70's model.

OMC was psychotic about putting parts numbers on everything. If you can find a casting number on the carb that would go along way to figuring out the horsepower. Look for 6 digits starting with a "38" cast right into the carb (usually slightly raised numbers)."

ok that plug had the numbers o

ok that plug had the numbers on it and they are 386247RPH where can I crossreference it to find the year and hp. Thanks for all the help

"Hi all, I am working with an older I think e-rude. The numbers I have gotten off of it for the model # are 85093D6 and the S/N is E06456. I would realy like to know the year and HP of this engine. I has been sitting for several years and we are working on getting it going. I will get some pics of it as well and put on here. Any info would be great."

85093D would be a 1970 85 hp V

85093D would be a 1970 85 hp V4 Evinrude.

But when you have a question of your own start a new topic rather than tagging on to someone elses. They get lost if you do that.
