"Howard, that is a casting num

"Howard, that is a casting number (or something similar) or it could indicate that you have an 85 horse model that was remanufactured - however, that's just a guess on my part, but do believe that OEM reman powerheads do have an R in front of a serial or production number in some cases which makes it close to impossible to determine the age of the motor itself.

Prior to 1979, Evinrude model numbers were all digits.

If the motor was original to the boat I would suspect the first two digits of the model number to indicate the horsepower -

so if a 40 horse it could be 40705 etc.

If the motor is newer than 1979, it will use OMC's (modern) model number formula which in the case of an Ev would look something like

E40ECCA with the first letter (E for Ev, J for Johnson), the horsepower, one or more charaters that give design details, two charaters that give the year and a model run suffix.

So in my model number above:

E - Evinrude
40 - horsepower
E - electric start
CC - 1988 model
A - model run (A)

So depending on whether your motor is pre or post 1979, the model number will be as I have described above in the two examples.

It is normally located on a welsh plug on the powerhead (newer models) or on a plate (often located in/around the clamp bracket on all models..."
