"Hello, Someone can identify my mercury 50 Hp 4-cyl.
outboard ?
It is a Merc 500 thunderbolt ignition ,has a blue strip motor cover.I tried to find it , but there isn't any ID tag on the frame or on the motor. The seller said it 's 1970 motor but he 's not sure"

"The Blueband would make it a 70's model. If the tag has been lost/removed/rubbed off etc on exhaust housing, there should also be a welsh plug (silver disk about the size of a quarter) on the waterjacket (near the spark plugs) with a serial number stamped in it.

Have a look and see what you can find - the serial should be 7 digits most likely starting with a 3 or a 4...."

There were some numbers stamped instead.These are 8 digit numbers. 1017-4002. Is it right one? If not,What can I do to ID the motor? If you want to see the motor I would post some specific picture for you.
I need to replace a lower case seals causeof water contamination. Here the question: Can I use any 70's Merc 500 50HP 4cyl seals? because I don't see any difference in these motor seals.( in web site diagrams) thanks noah"

"That's not the serial - but believe the blue bands were built between 74 and 77.

Regardless, it does appear that the lower seal kit 26-79831A1 fits a wide range of the 50 horse models from the early 70's well into the 80's - so suspect it would work fine for your application..."
