I want 70 hp carbs on my 60 hp Evinrude

I believe your motor was 70 HP in 1985 before it was rated 60 HP at the propshaft in 1986 !-----The 70 HP model in 86 has more cubic inches.

I was told by a credible source the 60 and 70 are basically identical other than the carbs while the 75 hp was more cubic inches.

Your " credible scource "-----Is totally wrong !!!----That person needs to do some research.----Or you can do that right here on this website !!

Thanks for the heads up. Is there anything to be gained by putting older (late 70's) carbs from a 70 hp motor on my 60?

Your 60 HP motor was 49 cubic inches.----That model motor was marketed in say 84 / 85 as a 70 HP and a 75 HP model.----In 1986 a 56 cubic inch model was marketed as 70 HP at the propeller.------So no you would not gain anything by putting a 1983 model 70 HP carburetor on your 1986 model 60 HP.------There is a persistent MYTH out there that you can magically boost HP by bolting on a different carburetor.

Ok, thanks for that info Racerone. How do you find the specs for various motors? I've been on BRP parts list site but did see any specs listed.

Do you know if your motor is putting out the 60 HP as designed today.------I would check your motor before looking for " bolt it on , free power boost ".---------Or if your motor is not in tip top shape today , how can you expect other carburetors to magically help this motor along !

What about putting carbs on from a 84/85 75 hp model...worth anything?
No, the 75 hp was made until 88 on the 49 cid block. But that block has different porting so the carbs won't be worth the money. If you want more power get an 86 or newer 70 hp it is a significant power increase over your motor.
