"I need some help. I have a 57 Johnson 3hp that sheered the teeth off of the shaft at the motor. I pulled the lower unit and found that the teeth were gone and I can not find a shaft. I don't know if there is a sheer pin at the prop or not and if there is, why it didn't break. I was running the motor on my boat in good clear deep water when this happen. Don't know why it happen or what caused it??????"

"That area of the driveshaft..... they are not called teeth, those are splines.

That condition usually happens when someone neglects to install a O Ring in the top groove of the driveshaft and/or neglects to grease those splines thoroughly. Remove the powerhead to inspect the related/matching splines in the crankshaft. Usually both splines fail at the same time.

There is a shear pin in the propeller propshaft BUT that had nothing to do with the spline failure."
