"Hi, this is my first post. Good site here!
I bought a used Four Winns boat (20' Horizon 200, newly rebuilt 305 Chevy V8, OMC Cobra outdrive) last summer. I took it out with my family and after 15 minutes of operation on the very first ride, the sterndrive completely failed. That was an expensive ride.
Local boat mechanic took it all apart and said the gears were chewed up and it needed a complete rebuild. He wants about $5000 for it. I can't afford that so I'm looking for a reputable house to buy a remanufactured complete outdrive.
One place I talked to said I should just have my mechanic clean out the metal parts and rebuild the lower unit, should cost about $500 he said, and buy a remanned upper unit, which I've seen around online for about $1500.
The thing is I know next to nothing about boats, this was a huge mistake on my part as I didn't know about getting it surveyed (I was in a hurry to enjoy the rest of the summer-big dumb), plus the mechanic has taken almost a year to get to it and I've finally got him going...but he quoted me a reman price from his suippliers for a complete redrive at $4200, and that's before his labor to put it in!
So the question is, can someone recommend a good remanufactured sterndrive company and does it sound right, what the guy said about just rebuilding the lower unit for around $500 and buying the upper unit rebuilt?
I'd appreciate any guidance on this, I'm a complete fish out of water and learned my lesson by not asking more questions before I bought it.
Thanks a lot!
