I need help with engine ID

I have just bought my frist boat and would like any information on how to identify the serial number on a 5 hp Mariner outboard.
I have been told that there is usually a foil sticker on the tilt bracket but this motor has had a bad life and the surface finish is gone along with, I presume, the foil ID plate.
There is a disc that looks like a frost plug on the cylinder jacket and there is a number machined into it : 9767301, could this be the Engine Serial No. If so what year is this motor and what is the model description for sourcing spare parts as I have read that there are several standards of 5 hp engine.
This is a fully water cooled motor but beyond that I have no more information.
Can anyone tell me where the water tell-tale exits th engine as I have had the motor running in water but did not see water exit from any part of the casing/cowlings

most tell tales I have seen are 3/8 to 1/2 inch rubber hoses on the side of the motor, remove the cowl and you should see it? not a boat mechanic and not sure if I ever saw a 5 hp.

Thanks for the information.
There is a tube, but it goes from the cylinder head plate back into the base of the cylinder barrel, does this mean that it exits into the exhaust.
