"I hit a rock this afternoon, trashed my prop, broke off the bottom four or so inches of skeg, and bent the remaining porton of the skeg over, except for the maybe last 1 1/2 inches or so. A dealer ( the nearest OMC dealer) I called quoted about $350, which seemed a bit excessive. How difficult a repair is this? And does anyone think I should find a different shop? Thanx!"

"Remove the lower unit, then take that lower unit to a shop that repairs propellers (check the yellow pages). They can heli arc a new skeg on that unit rather reasonable. Check the prop shaft closely as if it's bent slightly, the lower unit will require dismantling to correct that problem."

"On closer examination, I see that the skeg is bent at the base. I have a choice between two repairs. One is a local welder with a great reputaton who would do the job right on the boat. The other is a shop who would need me to bring in the lower unit (about 100 mi. drive one way). The local guy seems to think he can do the job without damaging thelower unit. Do you think I'd be taking a big chance to go with him?"

"BTW- if it makes any difference, the motor in question is a 97 evinrude 3 cyl 50hp. Thanks"

"If you decide to weld it without taking it apart, make sure the heat is not able to destroy gaskets and shaft seals. Protect sensetive areas with rags soaked in water. That would keep the temperature down. Keep the gearcase oil while welding (cooling) and change it when done. If most of the skeg is lost, I would think that the heat is too close to vital parts, and dismantling would be necessary.
