I’m an idiot, please help.

Hello, I’d be really grateful for some help. I’m working on my first outboard and like a
moron, have no idea how to hook up the battery connection.

If someone could explain from these photos, I’d be really grateful. There’s a couple of extra cables that might be for a cut off. That might be where I'm missing something.

I’ve posted on x hoping for help.

My old 70 2 stroke gave out after 30 hard years in 2023 so I am going by a fuzzy memory- Underneath the box with the emergency engine operation sticker is the solenoid and on that solenoid is one side with a nice shiny nut, that is a positive. Put the black rubber boots back on the red starter wire and the solenoid once hooked up. Negative can be either of the two rear starter motor bolts or if you look in between those two you will see a bolt with two other small black ground wires. The round plastic plug is your main harness that goes to the remote harness. Not sure what you are holding as a single wire coming from underneath.

That’s really helpful thank you. So I had connected the control unit tit he outboard (the multi pin one), connected the positive to side of the solenoid that then continues up to the starter, and the neg to the body for ground. But when I hooked up the battery it made like a bang like it was going to turn over without the ignition. This made me panic and so I just disconnected the positive to the battery (which I was holding) immediately. I presumed I would hear a small click as the solenoid kicked in and then I’d turn the key on the controller to turn her over.

The neg on the engine body I used also was feeding another neg back to the terminal block left of the solenoid. But I don’t think a shared neg matters.

I’m not sure if I’m just being a fool because this is the first outboard I’ve wired to a car battery and I don’t want to destroy it.

The little wires I showed in the pictures, the green one is for a tach and so can be ignored. The red one is actually connected to the main control unit connection coming from the outboard. I’m not sure if it’s a fused connection to protect the starter or for a connection to a boat horn.

I wish I’d taken the time to understand electronics better. It makes me feel so stupid. But I’m trying to understand.

So you can see on the attached where I attempted the pos and neg in red and black arrows and the main controller was also already connected.

Am I just over worrying or did I get this wrong somehow?

I really appreciate you all trying to help me out. I’m sure for those that understand it easily that it is frustrating to lead an idiot to water (excuse the pun) 👍🏻

Hello, I’ve attached a photograph as I’m not sure. I hope that’s ok. I sincerely appreciate your time.

Thank you

??---Battery hooks to one big post on the solenoid.---Starter motor hooks to other big post.-----The solenoid is a simple ( heavy duty ) electric switch that connects the 2 big posts.
