Hydrolock, what parts do I need ?

Hi guys, I'm pretty new here and need some advice. I recently hydrolocked my engine due to cracked manifold or exhaust flapper, just looking for advice on what parts to buy before my mechanic starts putting it back together. Hopefully I can save some time by having everything ready to go. I read in another post about bent rods etc, I'm hoping I didn't do that much damage. This is what I know I need.....

-New Manifolds (already has new risers)
-Head gasket set (we took head off to look for damage, can`t see anything obvious. Motor turned over fine when we took plugs out)
-New exhaust flappers (discovered that one was gone when we pulled manifolds)

Anybody got anything to add, please go ahead. I live in rural NL, no Mercruiser shop around here to help, I just have my mechanic (he has worked on these boats, just not every day like in bigger places) Also any ideas on some preventative maintenance I can do while the boats in the shop would help, want to try and get it running perfect again.... me (and my mechanic) appreciate any help we can get..

Thanks,

Rob

Engine is 1998 350 mag mpi

Why didn't you just replace the exhaust shutter and be done w/it? All it did was suck in some backwash and stop. Freshen up the heads and inspect the cylinders for wear. May just go ahead and do a minor rebuild w/new rings, etc. Pull the starter and have it serviced if engine is pulled.

Properly diagnose it first or you may end up buying stuff you don't need, or missing out parts you do need. If it is already stripped it should be quite obvious what you need.

Thanks for the input guys, the mechanic (he is a friend of mine, only has my interests in mind) said the manifold is cracked and he is sure thats how water got in, and the shutter is also gone. I have a new starter to go on, just looking for a list of gaskets etc. that we will need to put heads and new manifolds back on and replace all the shutters. Anything else I should do during this process ? Really appreciate any thoughts on this at all, I learn so much from these discussions. Thanks again...

Conne River eh?
Been a long time since I have gone out through Bay D'Espoir in a boat. My favorite spot was Harbour Galley.....the memories. Good luck getting your boat fixed.

Why did the mani's crack ? Frozen water inside ?

Flapper did you find it ? Did it block the exhaust, might find it in the exhaust pipe.

You have water in the oil ?

How you doin up there idzbye, didn't think anyone on here knew where CR was.

I'm hoping we didn't bend the rods, this happened while the boat was idling, and I didn't try and take off after I noticed the rough idle. I shut it off, then it wouldn't turn over to start. We might do what you said and pull the pistons, maybe I should take this opportunity to do the rings as well ?

The manifold cracked due to corrosion I guess, boat has about 500 hours on it.

I haven't found the flapper yet, it seems like it just corroded and disintegrated more than just came loose, I'll have another look.

No water in oil.

Thanks for the thoughts everybody, but can someone put up a complete list of things I need to order to do the repair (assuming rods aren't bent).... I know I need

-New Manifolds (already has new risers)
-Head gasket
-New exhaust flappers

I have to order this stuff, takes a week to 3 weeks to get some stuff from our dealer, anybody got anything to add before I order ?

OK so this is what I ordered...

-OSCO manifolds
-Riser and block manifold gaskets
-Water shutters
-Oil pan gasket
-Head Gaskets
-Valve cover gaskets
-oil pressure sensor
-thermostat
-sparkplugs

Anything to add ?

Thanks

You didn't mention what engine, you'll need an intake manifold set.

Carb Rebuild set ? ( while your playing... )

6 Cans of Engine Paint.

Hows your Plug Wires ?

I doubt that you caused any damage. I had a guy that refused to believe his manifold was cracked on a 228, and locked up his engine at least once a week for a whole season. He did however replace the mainifold the next season, and the engine was still running the last I knew.
